We are back baby! Although we were posting our daily plays on the Twitter account, the articles were long overdue. After a few successful days last week, we had one blow up day where we went 2-4 and has ruined a lot of the fun we would've had otherwise. I did a lot of research for today's games and we call on the king of player props to get us through the slate today for a big day. Here are the plays:
Bryan Rust ov2.5 shots (-130) VS LA
Rust is shooting the puck at a strong rate this year so far through the Pens first 3 games. He currently has 11 shots for an average of 3.666 shots per game. In his most 5 recent games against LA, which does date back to the 2018 season when Rust was getting less ice time, he hit over this line in ALL 5 games. The Kings are getting some weird games where they are going into offensive shootouts and winning recently. They allow an average of 34.6 shots a game through the first 5 games this year. While they struggle to figure out their defensive assignments, it makes complete sense to roll with Rust here.
Tyler Seguin un2.5 shots (-115) @ Toronto
Unfortunately, the Tyler Seguin of old has dwindled down into his current version. He's still relatively young (30), but he is taking shots at a lesser rate drastically. Last year, he only averaged about 2.69 shots per game. He previously used to average well over 3 shots per game. In fact, during the 2019-20 season, he averaged 3.55 shots per game. Seguin had an injury the following season, but he's taken a bit of a back seat to guys like Jason Robertson and Roope Hintz in Dallas. He now enters Toronto tonight, the team that could have drafted him, but chose the Hot Dog champion Phil the Thrill instead. To be fair though, they didn't exactly know that the number of the pick they traded was going to be so high to allow Boston to select Seguin. Today, Seguin is also getting overshadowed by guys like Mason Marchment, and they also have a weird powerplay deployment I can't figure out. I watched how they skated the first unit for only 45 seconds and would take them off after the first whistle. Then the 2nd unit (where Seguin was recently) would skate about 45 seconds to a minute and they would bring on a checking line? It was kind of strange, not sure what is going on with that. Anyway, while Seguin is being continually pushed down in the lineup, I would fade his shooting line. Don't forget the Leafs held the MIGHTY Arizona Coyotes to under 20 shots this week.
Jean-Gabriel Pageau ov 0.5 points (+120) VS New Jersey
In the last 3 years, no one has more points on the Islanders against the Devils than JGP. He has 12 points in his last 13 matchups against the Black and Red to be exact. While Lindy Ruff is doing just enough to hold onto his job, the time is now to exploit players that play against the Devils. At any given time, I feel that the Devils are ready to quit on their coach and take a 6-1 or 7-0 beating and cause a change behind the bench. JGP all the way.
Teuvo Teravainen ov0.5 points (-130) @ Edmonton
There were two Hurricanes that I really liked for this match-up and I circled with an old-fashioned pen and paper last night with big words "LOOK AT THEIR PROPS IN THE MORNING". One included Teuvo and the other one included Aho (who will make an appearance later in the article). Jack Campbell has had a rough start and is still trying to fit in with his new team. Stuart Little (I mean Skinner) had given up 3+ goals to the Sabres the other day. Additionally, he has good success in games against the Oilers when he played them recently. 7 points in the last 4 meetings.
Shayne Gostibehere ov0.5 points (-120) VS Montreal
Don't look now but Ghost is doing very well this season so far. He has 2 goals and 3 assists this year in 3 games. This is including a rough schedule with games against PIT, BOS and then TOR. I like Ghost to keep these numbers up against a team with middling numbers defensively (ranked 13th). However, we know that Montreal has been getting excellent performance from Jake Allen some games and they should really be ranked worse than this. They had 40 shots allowed against the Red Wings last week, and somehow Jake Allen held onto a shutout until the 3rd period. I like Ghost to get on the scoresheet tonight in the battle of the two worst teams from last year.
Bonus Power Play Parlay
Dylan Strome ov0.5 PPP
Sebastian Aho ov0.5 PPP
Blake Wheeler ov0.5 PPP
(+5858) 0.5 unit play
I vetted this list to ensure everyone here is on the first power-play unit. There isn't a ton of information yet that can be considered a strong sample size for Powerplay / Penalities this year. However, we do have recent player performance and metrics to our advantage. Dylan Strome has 4 points this year and every single one came on the first powerplay unit. Anton Forsberg gets the start tonight and he has not looked exactly great in a game against Boston Tuesday when he gave up 5 goals (1 was on the power-play). Sebastian has 9 points (including 3 scored on the power-play) in his last 4 match-ups against the Oilers. Finally, Blake Wheeler doesn't have any power-play goals scored yet, however, he did have 1 PPP in both games against Vegas last year. He is still getting a lot of time on the first PP unit as well.
